Oakland County Bar, Legal Aid and Defender sponsor help desk for
pro se litigants at Oakland County Courthouse

PONTIAC, Mich. - The Oakland County Bar Association and Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. are jointly sponsoring a help desk for pro se litigants at the Oakland
County Courthouse.

The help desk is open on Thursdays from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the lobby of the north entrance of the courthouse, 1200 N. Telegraph Road, Pontiac.  Pro se litigants - litigants acting as their own attorneys - can obtain legal information and referrals there on a first-come, first- served basis from staff attorneys from Legal Aid and Defender or attorneys in private or corporate practice who are volunteering their time pro bono.

"Pro se litigants have been trying to get help from court officials, but they can't provide legal advice or referrals," said Kelly L. Bidelman, managing attorney of Legal Aid and Defender's offices in Macomb and Oakland counties.  "However, the help desk can provide timely legal
information and referrals to these litigants.  And we can help the court by reducing officials' workloads."

"The OCBA is pleased to participate in this program, recognizing the increased need for pro bono legal assistance throughout the county, especially in these difficult economic times," said Michael D. Schloff, an attorney with the firm of Condit McGarry & Schloff and president of the OCBA.

For further information on the help desk, please call Legal Aid and Defender's Oakland County office at (248) 253-1548.

The Oakland County Bar Association offers professional continuing legal education seminars, camaraderie and networking, and the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the legal and justice systems to its more than 3,000 members.  For further information, call (248)
