FREE TRAINING IN 3 PRACTICE AREAS FOR PROSPECTIVE PRO BONO ATTORNEYS
DETROITLegal Aid and Defender Association,
Inc. and the Macomb County Bar Association (OCBA) are offering free
training in three practice areas for new private attorneys in Macomb
County willing to perform pro bono work:
Wills and Estate Planning for New Attorneys, June 22
Probate: Procedures and Tax Aspects, June 26
Buying, Selling and Transferring Personal Residences,
June 27
The sessions will be conducted from 1 to 3 p.m. in the conference
room of the Robert A. Verkuilen Building, 21885 Dunham Road, Clinton
Township.
The instructor will be Joan C. Von Handorf, an attorney in private
practice who specializes in estate planning, probate, real estate
and taxes. She has a masters degree in taxation, has published
articles in the Michigan Bar Journal and the Probate and Estate
Planning Journal, has been an author and speaker for the Institute
for Continuing Legal Education, and is a member of the Probate and
Estate Planning Council.
Wills and Estate Planning for New Attorneys will cover
estate planning techniques for small and modest estates, including
wills, testamentary trusts, living trusts, medical and durable powers
of attorney. It will feature a mock client interview, and participants
will receive a CD containing information about estate planning and
sample forms and letters.
Probate: Procedures and Tax Aspects will cover probate
procedures for decedents estates, guardianships and conservatorships;
special procedures for Macomb, Oakland and Wayne probate courts;
and tax aspects of probate. Participants will receive a CD containing
information about probate and sample forms and pleadings.
Buying, Selling and Transferring Personal Residences
will cover how to represent clients who are buying, selling or transferring
personal residences, and the tax aspects involved in conveying a
personal residence. Participants will receive a CD containing sample
purchase agreements and deeds.
Participants who attend any or all of the sessions will be asked
to handle two pro bono cases or perform 30 hours of pro bono work.
