The Legal Legacy Campaign
will enable LAD to relocate from the Penobscot Building to
its new headquarters building at 613 Abbott in downtown Detroit
( above ) in November 2007. Legal Aid has purchased the building
with tax-exempt bonds, but must raise $1.5 million through
the Legal Legacy Campaign to acquire new technology, equipment
and furniture, and to help establish a legal services endowment
fund for children and juveniles. Operating from the new location
will improve the delivery of legal services throughout LADs
three-county Metro Detroit service area because attorneys
and support staff will benefit from a more efficient environment
and because building ownership will allow LAD one day to redirect
significant rent payments to support more client services.
All this will help improve and increase the services for needy
clients in all three counties, including Macomb and Oakland
Counties for which LAD houses intake and advice telephone
lines in Detroit and maintains office that will remain open
in Pontiac and Clinton Township.
