The Legal Legacy Campaign has enabled LAD to relocate from the Penobscot Building to its new headquarters building at 613 Abbott in downtown Detroit in November 2007. Legal Aid purchased the building with tax-exempt bonds, but must raise $1.5 million through the Legal Legacy Campaign to acquire new technology, equipment and furniture, and to help establish a legal services endowment fund for children and juveniles. Operating from the new location has improved the delivery of legal services throughout LAD’s three-county Metro Detroit service area because attorneys and support staff will benefit from a more efficient environment and because building ownership allows LAD to redirect significant rent payments to support more client services. All this will help improve and increase the services for needy clients in all three counties, including Macomb and Oakland Counties for which LAD houses intake and advice telephone lines in Detroit and maintains offices that will remain open in Pontiac and Clinton Township.
