Thousands of children every year find their way into our justice system and the Juvenile Law Group represents some 40 percent of the cases on the Juvenile Court Docket. In 2007, the Juvenile Law Group handled 4,151 matters, according to Chief Counsel Regina Daniels-Thomas. The Juvenile Law Group handles child protection proceedings, wherein children are either abused or neglected. The group also handles delinquency cases as well as appeals resulting from Juvenile Court decisions. In the area of child protection proceedings juvenile attorneys see many neglect matters where lack of appropriate housing is an issue. This is due to in part to an increase in the cost of affordable housing as well as unemployment issues, according to Daniels-Thomas. During the winter the Juvenile Law attorneys see a number of clients living in homes without utilities. On the delinquency side the Juvenile Law Group has seen over the last several years an increase in the number of court actions that are the result of school issues such as truancy. A recent report found that only 32 percent of children who start school in the ninth grade in Detroit actually graduate before turning 18. There is also the high incidence of school fights that are charged as assault, assault and battery, or felonious assault. Also, the group represents clients charged with thefts in school that result.
